Third Person Wide Character Turns

I'm using the Third person controller with a top-down angled view. No mouse movement is used. Only keyboard or controller.

One issue that I'm having is that the character movement feels a little wonky when changing directions. When the character turns he makes a pretty wide turn. If you try to move the character side to side the character controller starts to move the character forward a little before turning when I would be expecting the character to move only to the sides. It seems like the controller tries to drive the character forward a bit when turning. This makes the controls feel a bit off. Is there a way to make the character turn in place instead? I have tried to increase the motor rotation speed and that can help at higher numbers, but then the character turns too sharply and it is then hard to move at curved angles smoothly. I have tried using the adventure and the top-down movement type, but both seem to have the same issue.
