If I move forward and jump then stop moving whilst in the air, the character stop moving horizontally instantly.


The doc says "By default when the character is in the air it will use the Motor Acceleration and Motor Damping values to determine the speed." Changing these values also affects ground movement. Is there a way to allow air 'velocity' to work independantly of ground velocity?
 
Yes - you can use the state system to adjust the values when the airborne state is active.
