Help with optimizing

I'm looking to optimize BD in my scene. One way I was thinking is to not have my NPC's animate when not being seen. I would like the position to update just not the animation. If there an easy way to do this?
 
There isn't an easy way to do this with the Ultimate Character Controller but I have it on my list to look at. One thing that will help is if you change the Animator Monitor's Update Location to Late Update so the animator won't update at every fixed interval.
